The HeartSpark Story

HeartSpark began as an idea in July 2023 and by September a small circle of six girls began to meet with Holly Hashimi on a weekly basis to talk, create and support one another. What started around one table quickly grew into something bigger — a place where friendships could take root and be nurtured through a tradition of kindness and respect for ourselves, each other and our community.

Holly built HeartSpark’s programming by drawing on her own experiences and the feedback of the kids and parents who joined the HeartSpark family. Their voices and ideas helped shape every session, making the program both responsive and meaningful. From those early gatherings, HeartSpark Ltd. grew into a nonprofit now serving up to 30 girls every week.

In spring 2025, the nonprofit’s women’s arm, The HeartSpark Collective, began offering space to explore confidence, leadership, creativity and stories of resilience and inspiration. These programs have always remained low-cost or free, supported by volunteers, grants and the generosity of our community.

The response has been deeply moving. Participants and parents have shared how HeartSpark has helped them feel seen and heard, given them chances to learn new things and opened the door to new friendships.

Part of what makes HeartSpark unique is that its programs extend beyond the room into the wider community through volunteerism and collaboration.

It became clear that this way of working — blending creativity with compassion, collaboration and connection — could reach even more people in meaningful ways.

That’s when HeartSpark Creative was born: a way to bring the same heart and creativity into workshops, events and trainings for all ages, while keeping HeartSpark Ltd. focused on its original mission for girls and women.

Today, both branches stand side by side: one as a nonprofit rooted in community, the other as a business that extends this work more widely. Together, they carry the same intention — to create spaces where people can feel connected, peaceful, hopeful and inspired.

Transparency

HeartSpark Creative is a for-profit business founded by Holly Hashimi to bring workshops, events and trainings to schools, workplaces and community groups.

Holly is also the founder and board president of HeartSpark Ltd., a nonprofit established in 2023, offering free programming for girls and low-cost programming for women in Wood Buffalo. At times, HeartSpark Ltd. may contract HeartSpark Creative for facilitation services.

When this happens:

  • Contracts are reviewed and approved by arm’s-length directors of HeartSpark Ltd.

  • Holly recuses herself from related board discussions and votes.

  • Fees are set at fair market value and managed transparently.
